It’s not your grandpa’s Nintendo Entertainment System. Okay, that might be hyperbolic, but the Nintendo Switch offers so much that consoles from previous generations lacked. Among its very best qualities is an ability to grab and go, moving from TV based play to portable fun; additionally, the development of online play is far superior to previous iterations of Nintendo consoles. These features could breathe new life into an old idea: side-scrolling Zelda fun.

The proverbial black sheep of the franchise (I think this is unfair), Zelda II: The Adventure of Link is the only title in the series to feature side-scrolling action. Yes, a few of the handheld games offer moments of it, but not to the degree of this classic NES title. The poor graphics, ungodly difficulty, and general deviation from the norms of the Zelda universe make the game frustrating for many.

Recently, Nintendo Switch Online added the ability to rewind, a game-changing feature for many titles, but most notably Zelda II. Some folks, myself included, gave the game another shot and fell in love with its eccentricities and unique feel. Like many of you already know, the sequel to the original has a lot to offer and is responsible for a number of the mainstays of Zelda lore.

With the success of many new platformers and side-scrolling action games, along with the resurgence of retro-gaming, perhaps it’s time for Nintendo to give the format another look. I wouldn’t want a permanent change in the Zelda series; I love both the top-down and 3D formatted games. But why not a one-time adventure that could take advantage of the convenience and connectivity of the Switch?

Imagine updated, yet retro graphics, combined with more in-depth story telling. The action could be solo or even feature multiplayer fun with Link down-thrusting Bokoblins while Zelda volleys Light Arrows at diving Keese. On a break at work or sitting in café having lunch, gamers could enjoy online play that features time challenges, record-keeping, and team play much in the way Super Mario Maker 2 does now, while the story mode could offer a sentimental medium for a beloved mythology.

Yes, we could simply remaster Zelda II, but why not do more? Better yet do both!
