In Breath of the Wild, one of the more interesting aspects of Link’s adventures is experimenting with food. Using a humble cooking pot, you can really cook up a storm or something more dubious! The importance of preparing the right meal before facing a dangerous enemy is vital. Such dishes boost offence and defence and can make the difference between victory and defeat. But this advantage could be viewed another way — is it actually fair? Should future games utilize food/health restoration system of Breath of the Wild?

I’m very much in two minds about this. If you’ve been caught by surprise, having the ability to switch to the menu and choose a meal is a big help. Strategically, you can turn the tables on the enemy with the right elixirs or meal.  It gives you the chance to regroup and think about your options before diving back in. This is great for players that may feel overwhelmed and would otherwise panic. The Legend of Zelda is meant to be an enjoyable experience not something you dread playing. Having the food/health restoration system is a reassuring crutch that you can call on if needed.

On the flip side of the coin, does having such a system make things too easy? Older games in the series have potions and fairies to help but they are limited. You have to conserve your resources and think carefully about the prime time to use them. I suppose this depends upon what you actually want from the game. If you want to “master” the game and show off your fighting skills, would stopping mid flow for a snack ruin the tension of the battle? Would you prefer the game to punish you more harshly for lack of skill? Does having the food/health restoration system take away from this? Tough questions, and because every Zelda fan is different, not easy to answer!

So, what do you think? Should future Zelda games utilize this or find a different way to gain health? Maybe the number of certain quality meals should be restricted? Whatever your thoughts, remember to comment below!
