Based on the responses from our Daily Debate earlier this week, we’ve found many fans do not approve of amiibo or, at the very least, do not have strong opinions on amiibo overall. Nintendo has expressed their desire to expand amiibo in future titles; but with games like Tri Force Heroes opting out of amiibo support altogether, we’re left to question the status of these figures in future Zelda games. So today we ask: should future Zelda games support amiibo, or should they disregard amiibo completely?

The implementation of amiibo has been a huge hit for Nintendo, with millions of units sold and many figures frustratingly selling out. Nintendo obviously has big plans for amiibo in the future, but do these plans necessarily need to involve The Legend of Zelda? Some have proposed reasons why we shouldn’t fear amiibo in a future Zelda game. As well, there are those who argue that amiibo support offers interesting possibilities for future Zelda games. The figures could obviously be used to unlock new content within future games, and they may actually incentivize the Zelda team into creating and including even more content they would not have otherwise. Amiibo may give developers more reason to produce more dungeons, weapons, or other such content in future Zelda games. And even if amiibo don’t unlock substantial content in future games, they could at least unlock unobtrusive, cosmetic content, such as costumes and bonus characters. I actually enjoy this use of amiibo in games like Super Mario Maker and Yoshi’s Woolly World.

However, some fans may feel that the Zelda series should ignore amiibo completely moving forward. Nintendo has already confirmed that Tri Force Heroes will not support amiibo anyway, so why not keep them away from Zelda completely? Many commenters on Zelda Informer have expressed their displeasure with amiibo, for a variety of reasons. Some feel that the figures lock players out of content that they should otherwise receive, especially when certain figures are sold out with no certain availability in the future. Others feel that Nintendo should spend less time focusing on amiibo and more time on more games, especially with most of the Zelda community waiting anxiously for Zelda U. And others simply feel that the figures are not of the same quality of other Zelda figures. With all these perspectives floating around in the Zelda fanbase, Nintendo may want to reconsider supporting amiibo within the Zelda franchise.

Which side are you on? Do you feel that the Zelda series should disregard amiibo support? Or do you think Nintendo can still find interesting ways to use the figures in future Zelda titles? Share your thoughts in the comments, and join the Daily Debate!
