Music has always played a huge part in the Zelda series, and there are a few titles that actually make a musical instrument integral to the game’s story. A great example of this is Ocarina of Time, which gets its namesake from its featured instrument, which allowed Link to traverse time in order to save Hyrule. Majora’s Mask went a step further by introducing different types of musical instruments. Link utilized different songs on various instruments like the Deku Pipes and the Goron Drums to progress in-game. The Wind Waker is a musical game that is even named after its famous conductor’s baton. This magical baton allowed Link to control the winds and traverse the Great Sea with ease. Whats more, he could even take control of others, awaken Sages, and more! Musical elements are even found in Twilight Princess during the howling wolf songs.

The use of music in-game has certainly been a classic staple in these popular Zelda titles. After it’s absence in Breath of the Wild, I think this in-game musical element needs to return. That said, the lack of story relevant musical inclusion in Breath of the Wild did not actually disappoint me. I can’t think how this type of musical element would actually have made sense in the game. The only musical piece that played a memorable part in the story was Kass’ stories of legend.

The sequel to Breath of the Wild could see to change that though. Its predecessor mentioned the “Hero of Time”, so what if we saw the return of the ocarina as a useable item? Breath of the Wild was full of classic throwbacks, so why not add this huge one in? I could see the ocarina being used in a way that helped tell the stories of the past. Maybe, with the assistance of Kass, the ocarina could work by letting Link look into the past to see what happened before Calamity Ganon was sealed?  I think it would be a fun story telling device and would also let the player feel “more in tune” with the story at large.

What do you think? Should music play a bigger role in Breath of the Wild 2? Sound off in the comments below!
