Hyrule’s hero wears a Green Tunic and a matching hat. For decades, this statement helped define Zelda. While Link would occasionally don a different color to boost his stats or provide him environmental abilities, the base clothing for each game was always his trusty green garb.

That’s changed in the last four Zelda games (I’m counting Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity here to help illustrate my point). Now, that standard green tunic is a reward for completing a challenge. Breath of the Wild had players conquer all of Hyrule’s Shrines for the Hero of the Wild Set. Age of Calamity offered the Hero of the Wild gear for completing the “Hyrule’s Greatest Warrior” challenge and the Hyrule Warrior’s Set for finishing the “The Hope of All Hyrule” quest. And varieties of Green Tunics, Caps, and corresponding Trousers hid in Tears of the Kingdom’s Depths.

The most recent Zelda game, Echoes of Wisdom, also rewarded a Green Tunic to players who bested an in-game challenge: The Titans’ Final Gathering, the ultimate Slumber Dojo training session. But is Zelda wearing Link’s standard colors a suitable reward for such a challenge?

Princess Zelda, the heroine this time, isn’t affiliated with Link’s signature green. Since Nintendo is emphasizing different outfits in modern Zelda, it’s understandable that the games would let Link look how he has historically. But that connection to the green garb doesn’t exist for Zelda.

If not the Tunic, what could have been the prize for surviving The Titans’ Final Gathering? I think a Heart Container would have sufficed. If Nintendo and Grezzo (the game’s co-developer) wanted a costume as the reward, a variation of Sheik’s outfit from Ocarina of Time might have better served the princess’ history.

I have to admit that I’m fine with the Green Tunic being the training session’s reward. It’s a nod to the series’ legacy and provides an easy explanation for Link’s clothes in the game. Considering the Tunic is tied to optional side content and it doesn’t boost Zelda’s stats, its inclusion here is just a fun nod to the wider franchise.

What do you think? Is the Green Tunic a suitable reward for completing Echoes of Wisdom’s Slumber Dojo? Let us know down in the comments!
