I’ve been a fan of Zelda ever since I was a wee 8 year old; in fact, it’s my all-time favorite video game series ever! However, for so long I never thought about what I loved about this series in particular. Was it the unforgettable stories? Or the gameplay? Maybe a little bit of both?

Many fans over the years have been critical toward some entries in the series for a plethora of reasons. For example, Skyward Sword was known for its strong, well-developed story, but suffered with its linearity gameplay according to some long-time fans. As for the latest entry, Breath of the Wild, the gameplay was heavily praised, but the story was not a favorite of fans because of its need to be pieced together.

However, the more I’ve played through Breath of the Wild, the more I appreciate the way Nintendo crafted a unique, yet cohesive story through such an open world game, even if it was a bit different from what other games did in the series. And although Skyward Sword was linear, it’s one of my favorite games in the series because of its beautiful story and depictions of character growth. With that being said, I do believe that I am drawn to Zelda for the stories often more than the gameplay. However, when both are woven together well, they blend together into an unforgettable masterpiece. I have high hopes that Tears of the Kingdom will deliver on both parts this year!

What about you? Does the gameplay or the story drive you more to Zelda? Let me know in the comments!
