Gorons: a stout race. Known for their stony hides, fraternal social structures, and penchant for dang delicious rock sirloin, they’ve been a series staple for many years. But what of the culture of our bouldering brothers? How do they fashion themselves? Just how much does their biology allow?

In some games like Ocarina of Time, Skyward Sword, and even Breath of the Wild, we see them sprout little tufts of hair from their lil’ dumpling heads, some even sporting billowing beards and well-groomed whiskers. Yet in Twilight Princess, all hair, facial or otherwise, seems to be sculpted from jagged rock, cut and smoothed to perfection.

Being great, hulking creatures of stone in Twilight Princess, we see the likes of former Twilit Igniter Darbus rock a flattop to end all flattops. Sorry Guile of Street Fighter fame, you’re officially cancelled.

A great, jagged mound hangs bellow this guy’s chin. Surely, he is a Goron with an arduous stone-scaping regimen, whose ‘do may only be rivaled by a trio entirely removed from personal upkeep — the Goron Elders.

In their heydays, they, too, might’ve cared for such crisp, trendy cuts, but now they grow withered, free, and closer to divinity as they meditate deep within their solitary caves. It’s Elder Gor Ebizo who wins by a landslide amongst his peers. A hunchback and pipe befit the earthy way his rigid locks flank his drooping jaw. Darbus can but gaze at his future.

But as Goron greats go, we can’t forget Ocarina of Time’s Darunia, who, if Hyrule Warriors is anything to go by, definitely fosters hair, not stone. Our great Sage of Fire and Lord of the Dance stood proud as his tribe’s patriarch, wreathed in pointed locks that befit a lava-borne King — most likely anointed for the follicles alone. Is that how Goron culture works?

Whether they fashion their pebbles or groom their locks, Gorons hold a distinct visual style in the way they hold themselves. Seemingly all male, the lovable giants tend to be tatted, but is carving their mountainous hides similarly permanent? Do the carvings grow back like hair? Are there stonemason barbers in Death Mountain? Let us know in the comments below!
