Daily Debate: Does Twilight Princess’ Death Mountain Confuse You Too?
Posted on November 19 2024 by Nick Miller

I remember vividly my first playthrough of Twilight Princess. After watching that jaw-dropping E3 announcement trailer, I scrimped and saved so that I could get it the day it released — and it was incredible! However, there’s one thing from that playthrough that I remember confusing me then, and it still confuses me now, Death Mountain. I mean, just look at that thing! What the heck is going on there?
To this day I still ask myself, how does that resemble a volcano. Sure, it has lava and rocks, but what volcano has ever looked like that? It’s a giant ball like Joe Dirt’s meteor or a burnt loaf of sourdough bread, almost like Robotnik jumped over from Sonic the Hedgehog to crash his Death Egg into Hyrule.
This of course raises some questions. How do Gorons live on that? Does it have its own gravitational field like a miniature planet that allows them to walk upside down like Australians? How did a natural formation of that magnitude take that shape? What geological calamities has it endured? Why hasn’t it rolled away yet?
I had hoped for an explanation at some point, but no, they gave us nothing. If it looked like any other plain old volcano then that’d be fine, but you can’t just drop a giant flaming hot golf ball up there and not say anything about it! That’s what we call ignoring the elephant in the room. So, with no hint of reason or explanation Death Mountain sits there, looming ominously over Kakariko Village like the moon over Clock Town.
What do you think? Does Twilight Princess‘ Death Mountain confuse you too? What in-game explanation could make it look like that? Share your thoughts in the comments below.
