In keeping with the spirit of the game’s marketing campaign, the latest Tears of the Kingdom teaser was simultaneously informative yet vague. From the premise to the new gameplay mechanics, many of even the most basic elements remain open to speculation. Considering that we’re — finally! — so close to release, I’m all for it. Some may understandably wish for a happier medium between total secrecy and outright spoiling the game, but personally, I’m beginning to find this approach refreshing.

For as ambiguous as certain aspects of the teaser are, though, one relatively safe bet we can make is the identity of the villainous voice heard near the beginning. Although Nintendo has yet to confirm whether that speech came from Ganondorf — or even whether the Demon King will appear in the game — the available evidence seems to point in that direction. I mean, come on — when you lead with “Rise, my servants,” that tends to narrow things down.

With that disclaimer out of the way, let’s just assume — for the sake of this discussion — that that is Ganondorf’s voice. If so, what’s your first impression? Does it more or less match your idea of what Ganondorf should sound like?

Since the first time I played Ocarina of Time, the Ganon voice I’ve heard in my head has evolved throughout the years. These days, whenever I read his dialogue, I default to prolific voice actor Jamieson Price. His booming presence fits the Gerudo King perfectly. And though the voice we hear in the trailer isn’t as deep as Price’s, I’m still supremely confident in his ability to bring the character to life.

Again, nothing has been confirmed, but if my — as well as other fans’ — knack for distinguishing voices is on-point, then that sounds an awful lot like another one of my favorite actors, Matthew Mercer. From Chrom in Fire Emblem Awakening to Yusuke in Persona 5, this guy always brings his A-game. If that is indeed Mercer, then I seriously hope he’s given ample screen time to showcase his talent.

I’d love to hear your thoughts, though. Assuming that voice in the trailer does belong to Ganondorf, what is your first impression? Does it seem like a good fit? Do you prefer his voice in French, Spanish, Italian, or Japanese? Let us know in the comments below!
