In Breath of the Wild, players explored a Hyrule a hundred years after Calamity Ganon, the land dotted with ruins of an age long past. An age where, as the memories allude towards, the kingdom of Hyrule was prosperous. Although the ruins seen could surely stand to be rebuilt, the time gap begs the question of whether or not Hyrule needs a kingdom at its’ center.

Since the Calamity nearly decimated Central Hyrule, the villages around it have had to adapt to living without it. The stable system was established to improve trade and commerce as well as the respective leaders assuming sole control over their regions, so the people of Hyrule have gotten used to the absence of a centralized kingdom. Because this is the case, the sequel may very well confront the question of whether or not the kingdom is needed.

Although Hyrule Castle and Hyrule Castle Town would, as seen in other Zelda titles, be beneficial to the recovering unity of Hyrule, Princess Zelda’s own reluctance may be a contributing factor. Her hesitance towards her birthright sealing power and her obligation as a Princess is seen clearly in the memories, so it remains to be seen whether or not that hesitance will remain in the time after Breath of the Wild and Breath of the Wild 2.

What do you think? Is the kingdom necessary after one hundred years without it? Should Zelda rise to be Queen? Let us know in the comments below!
