Daily Debate: Do You Prefer Spirit Tracks or Phantom Hourglass?
Posted on November 13 2019 by John Piland
Few titles in the Zelda franchise have garnered more controversy and criticism than Phantom Hourglass and Spirit Tracks — the notorious touch-controlled games for the Nintendo DS. When comparing these two games, fans often find stark contrast between the over-worlds and dungeons. Some players believe Phantom Hourglass has a better over-world, and some fans believe that Spirit Tracks has better dungeons. Both over-worlds are constrained to the movements of either boat or train, so opinions may come down to freedom of maneuverability and entertainment offered while traveling the set paths.
Perhaps the most notorious feature of each game is the Temple of the Ocean King and the Tower of Spirits. Players must constantly return to these dungeons each time they complete a main dungeon, traversing their paths on multiple occasions. When it comes down to it, execution of the journeys both to and within these temples may be one of the most important things to consider when making judgement on their respective games.
A myriad of factors play into the ranking of these games, just as with any other title. The DS era is long in the past, and both games have been released for almost ten years or more. As time goes on, people have more time to reflect, and opinions can change. So, how do you think Phantom Hourglass and Spirit Tracks stand up to each other after all this time? Let us know in the comments below!

John has been a Zelda fan for over 10 years now and is proud to say the series has had a major impact on his life (and wallet). After years of going to Zelda Dungeon for guides or the latest news on the series, John achieved their dream when they joined the writing team in 2019; John can hardly believe how long it’s been. A librarian, he loves meticulously arranging his library of Zelda games and collectibles. After what felt like an eternity of waiting for Tears of the Kingdom, John looks forward to the future of the Zelda franchise with enthusiasm, whether that’s the upcoming movie, a new spin-off/remake, or the next big game.
