Someone told me a long time ago that the American penny was useless and that they could be done away with. They said one cent was just worthless and hard to deal with and that nickels, dimes, and quarters were better because we could deal in values of 5s instead of 1s. This long since conversation with a friend made me think, are green rupees worthless and should we get rid of them?

For nostalgia’s sake I’m going to say no. I would find it insanely weird to see currency in a Zelda game change so much that they take out the lowest valued piece. It would make cutting grass in Ocarina of Time for hours on end completely worthless if the green rupees were no longer a thing. Personally, there’s nothing like finding a penny on the ground. I equate that with finding a random rupee while walking through the grass. Early game green rupees can be super valuable and are essential if you want to buy anything from the first shop that you visit. On the other hand, once you start finding the higher valued red and blue rupees, green just seems to be a little lack luster (unless you spend all your money and are in desperate need of some rupees).

Imagine having to deal in terms of 5s with currency in a game though. I would imagine that finding rupees in a Zelda game would become much harder. I don’t like the idea of that much, especially if you need a weapons shop early on. I write this all in good fun, because personally I don’t think the penny is useless. Green rupees aren’t useless either – they are beautiful gems that make cutting all that grass worth while.

What do you think? Do we still need green rupees in Zelda games? Why or why not? Sound off in the comments below!
