One of the things I’ve always loved the most about the Zelda franchise is the soundtrack they put into the games. Some of the most memorable songs for me was “Midna’s Lament” from Twilight Princess, and “Ancient Hero” from The Wind Waker. To be honest, I could have listened to those songs for hours on end. They evoked different kinds of emotion, and they helped put you into the right mood that each story was trying to express.

When I heard Breath of the Wild was coming out, I was not only excited for the gameplay itself, but also for the music. The opening theme was gorgeous, and evoked such a feeling of nostalgia and excitement, along with a sense of melancholy at what had taken place in Hyrule.

While the opening theme and the music for battling Calamity Ganon was amazing, I was a little sad that the stylistic choice of the background music for roaming around Hyrule wasn’t quiet as memorable as past games. Of course, the music should be the most memorable and intense for the biggest scenes, but even so, most of the time I forgot the music was even there for everything else. Not only that, but many times the weather would drown out the music. While riding a horse through the map, every now and again you’d get a hint of the original overworld theme, if you were paying attention, but it always only lasted a few seconds.

I was a little disappointed in the music, to be honest, after having high hopes for it. While I enjoyed the sound they went for– when you could hear it– and the fact that it wasn’t overwhelming like it could be in Twilight Princess at times, I still thought perhaps they could have made it a bit more memorable.

What do you guys think? Did the music match the style of Breath of the Wild? Or was it a bit underwhelming? Let us know in the comments below!
