Among the many reveals in the recent Super Smash Bros. live presentation, there may be one most people missed — one that may just be a secret to everybody.

Right before unveiling the new Joker and Hero amiibo, Smash Bros. director Masahiro Sakurai mentioned that some fighters hadn’t received amiibo with updated designs for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, singling out Zelda fighters in particular:

“However, some fighters like Zelda and Ganondorf have their designs from Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS, so it’s too bad that we will not have updated versions. Ah, what a shame. But we’ve released them all.”

If the mere fact of mentioning fighters that lacked updated amiibo was not enough, Sakurai’s choice of words — “ah, what a shame” — and the way he said it scream that we’ll soon see updated figures to me. I hope this is the case, because we sorely need updated figures for characters that haven’t received amiibo since Super Smash Bros. 4. Knowing Sakurai, I think it’s only a matter of time before amiibo redesigns for these and other characters are announced.

On a side note, if these new figures are indeed a reality, I hope they bring new loot from their respective games to the sequel to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Unfortunately, though, I’m not too confident in an update for Breath of the Wild itself. But, stranger things have happened!

What do you think? Should we expect some new Smash series Zelda amiibo down the road? Will they have unique functionality in upcoming Zelda games? Let us know in the comments below!
