The Legend of Zelda; a story told over countless eras — or games, should I say?  The story tells of a brave warrior who battles against a fierce foe, all to save a beautiful princess.  The princess in question has been a helpless maiden, a stoic monarch and even a goddess reborn.  She has pulled on the strings of time, sacrificed her throne and even herself in the best interests of her people.  She is Princess Zelda, possessor of the Triforce of Wisdom (usually).

By now, you probably have some pretty positive thoughts on the Princess of Hyrule, and who can blame you?  With each incarnation she has blossomed into a hero in her own right.  But what if she wasn’t so perfect?  What if her decisions weren’t so virtuous?  We have seen Ganondorf take control of Zelda’s body in Twilight Princess, making her battle against Link, but this isn’t the type of corruption I’m talking about.  I’m talking about distorting Princess Zelda’s mind and twisting her thoughts in a way that would legitimately lead to the destruction of her kingdom through her own determination.

You might argue that the prospect of a corrupt Princess Zelda is preposterous.  Surely the Triforce of Wisdom couldn’t be possessed by someone of lesser virtue?  It goes to a soul that can use it to make the right decisions; usually the person whose veins flow with the blood of Hylia.  But consider this — there are different variables that could affect Zelda’s personality and as such, her actions.  She could suffer a traumatic loss, leading to a terrible desire for revenge on those who don’t really deserve it.  Perhaps, instead of being kind, honest and wise, she could be a spoiled, greedy and self-important princess.  Tired of  being a martyr, Zelda might see fit to act on her own selfish desires for once.  She might even abandon her responsibilities to her kingdom altogether!  Princess Zelda might even fall under the influences of Ganondorf, his words manipulating her beliefs.

Then again, if the Triforce of Wisdom does lead it’s bearer to make the right decisions, perhaps the possibility that Zelda could be corrupted is a moot point.  I think it would be great to see Princess Zelda struggle with her moral compass though, and whats a monarchy without a little corruption anyway?  But what do you think?  Could our favorite princess be corrupted?  Let us know in the comments below!
