Here is a thought experiment for you; if a scavenger tried to live in Breath of the Wild’s malice-consumed Hyrule Castle, do you think it would be possible for this person to survive long-term? The parameters for this experiment would be as follows: The scavenger can only travel within the locations contained within the 3D map of the Hyrule Castle Dungeon. All necessities of food, water, equipment and shelter would need to be found within this area. This experiment would take place prior to the defeat of Calamity Ganon, with the Guardians and monsters at their full strength. Given that setup, do you think that someone could survive living in the castle?

Personally, I think if someone was daring (stupid) enough to attempt this feat, it could be possible with a lot of luck. To avoid the Guardian turrets, first one would need to enter through the underground Docks. This area is critical as a source of water and will be returned to often. The Docks also contain food in its crates, which with any luck will regenerate each Blood Moon. More dangerously, food will need to be acquired through the Dining Hall. The Moblins in this room will make resource acquisition dangerous, but if food runs out at the Docks, this is one’s only choice. Weapons and shields are located across the castle, so it is not difficult to gain some means of defense.

Moving across the exterior courtyards of the castle is a death sentence. It is much safer to sneak around in the mine shafts and interior corridors. Scavengers would need to avoid the sunlight whenever possible (though this may have long term consequences on their eyesight). Without a doubt only those who are physically fit and stealthy will stand a chance of avoiding or escaping the many monsters that roam the halls. Also, they should try not to step in the malice, only bad things will happen. Do this for long enough, and I am pretty sure a crafty scavenger will develop a routine. It’s all about knowing which locations are safe and what times of day. If complacency doesn’t set in, I think someone could make a go of this.

Those are just my thoughts. Do you believe that someone could live in a Ganon-occupied Hyrule Castle? Let us know in the comments.
