It was always a long shot. Skull Kid, Impa, The Champions–these are the fighters dreams are made of–at least for Zelda fans who play Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Alas, that dream has ended. During the final “Mr. Sakurai Presents,” the legendary game developer delivered the news that Sora would in fact be the final character in the Fighters Pass Volume 2. The protagonist from the Kingdom Hearts franchise has long been a fan favorite among possible fighters to expand the Smash roster; but the selection has likely come as a disappointment to many Zelda fans.

In spite of being one of Nintendo’s oldest and most celebrated franchises, The Legend of Zelda has relatively poor representation in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Link, Zelda, Sheik, and Ganondorf round out the Zelda roster; true, players can select from three different versions of Link (Toon Link, Young Link, and Adult Link (Breath of the Wild version), but for many fans, including some of the other memorable characters from the the Zelda universe would be preferable.

Imagine getting to play as one of The Champions–spinning, slashing, and snapping down lightening as Urbosa; rolling over opposing players as Daruk; using Revali’s Gale to rise above competitors and rain down arrows as the Rito warrior; restoring all hit-point damage as Mipha. Better yet, imagine being able to switch between these warriors in a manner similar to the moveset of Pokémon Trainer. Oh what could have been!

Other fantastic choices from the Zelda universe include Skull Kid (movesets from Majora’s Mask would have been amazing), Vaati, Twinrova, Terrako, Impa, or even a Guardian. Sadly, fans will never get to see these dreams come to life.
