In the most recent trailer for Tears of the Kingdom, we see multiple characters with differently-colored tear-shaped relics. The most obvious one is the shining yellow tear that Zelda holds, but additionally, Sidon, Tulin, Ganondorf, and the mysterious unnamed woman are all shown have these small walnut-sized artifacts. According to one of the carvings in a previous trailer, there are seven such tears in play. Perhaps they will be distributed amongst the different races of Hyrule like the sages in Ocarina of Time.

My theory, however, is that the tears are not found but created. Tears of the Kingdom looks to be centered around the circular notion of loss and regrowth. Hyrule is quite literally being torn apart and this will more than likely affect the characters we know and love from Breath of the Wild. Tulin’s father Teba is suspiciously absent and there’s a shot of Sidon with the crown his father once wore, not to mention the fact that Link likely thinks Zelda did not survive her fall. Perhaps characters have to manage their grief in order to embody their bravery and become the warriors they are meant to be. Even Ganondorf and Zelda have plenty to mourn, and Riju and the yet unseen Yunobo likely have their own personal sacrifices to grapple with. Tears are just as much a symbol of sadness as they are a symbol of healing and strength in being vulnerable.

What do you think? Is this how the tears will come into being in Tears of the Kingdom? Would you feel disconnected from Link if he broke down and cried? Were there any tears I missed in the trailer? Let us know in the comments below!
