Could Link be dead in Majora’s Mask?

MMIt seems as though most people have accepted the idea that Majora’s Mask takes place in an alternate dimension version of Hyrule which is why a lot of the characters from Ocarina of Time appear in the game. While it’s no secret I’m not particularly keen on Majora’s Mask (and, to clarify this time, I’m not saying it’s a bad game, I just think most other Zelda games are better) there are a lot of theories revolving around it, what certain aspects represent and different interpretations of what people say or do and I absolutely love finding out about all these theories. I’m a huge fan of Matt Pat and his Game Theory series (though most videos are viewed with a pinch of salt) and the latest addition to has a very interesting theory: could Link be dead in Majora’s Mask?

Judge for yourself after the jump!

While I had heard the theory that the five areas represent the five stages of grief, I just thought it was the people of Termina coming to accept their own fate should the Link fail in his mission and the moon crashes into Clock Town. I never considered the possibility that it could actually be Link accepting his own death. The appearance of those he met during the events of Ocarina of Time would make sense as they are the last people he saw and maybe even grew attached to, like Ruto. The new characters are just his own imagination filling in the blanks.

But when would be the point he died? My guess would be when he was thrown off Epona and the descent through the ‘portal’ to Termina was his mind battling with itself on the brink between life and death, rather than it being the fall that killed him. The only thing that doesn’t sit right with me was when they mentioned the Hero’s Shade. What Matt says is a good argument and makes sense but with how tall the Hero’s Shade is, it seem as though it is the spirit of adult Link that is teaching the skills so he must have still been alive during the events of Majora’s Mask to grow into an adult, die and become the Hero’s Shade but that’s just my theory. Because of this I’m not entirely convinced the theory is true, but it is certainly plausible. (And seeing as Majora’s Mask and Twilight Princess occur in the same time line, I’m still hoping for a game where Ganondorf gets into Termina and finds Majora’s Mask!)

What do you think of this? Has the evidence Matt Pat has provided convinced you or can you think of any holes in it? Should I give the game another try taking this theory into account and see if I like it more? Let us know in the comments below.
