One of the things I appreciate about the Legend of Zelda franchise is how the graphics and art styles of the series have evolved throughout the years. The series’ art and design are always changing and evolving. If you show a longtime fan an art asset from almost any Zelda game, they can probably tell you what game it comes from. Even Ocarina of Time and Majora’s Mask, games that were built using many of the same art assets, have visual and stylistic differences that set them apart from each other.

The fan art and tributes to the Legend of Zelda series are even more diverse than the art styles within the game. Artists and designers have drawn Link, Zelda, and their companions in dozens of different styles. One of the most popular subjects for artists to draw has been Princess Zelda from Breath of the Wild. While some fans took issues with Zelda’s voice in Breath of the Wild, the character was one of the most fleshed out iterations of the character, displaying a diverse set of emotions.

This Princess Zelda speedpaint video by psychoSHAN is a really interesting visualization of the character. Overall, the art style and facial design makes me think that this version of Princess Zelda is a few years older than the version seen in Breath of the Wild. Additionally, Zelda’s hair in this speedpaint is more realistically colored than that seen in Breath of the Wild, which was very bright yellow/gold. I would love for Breath of the Wild‘s sequel to tweak Zelda’s hair color slightly to get a happy medium between the two. While the princess struggled with her identity for much of Breath of the Wild,  this speed paint depicts a very confident and happy Zelda.

It is always amazing to watch speedpaints because the videos give viewers an insight into the large amount of detail and patience that each piece takes to finish. In this case, creator psychoSHAN took about four hours working on this piece, from inception to completion. The results are excellent. There is a great level of incredible detail in the grass background and Zelda’s outfit.
