When you think of the darkest Zelda game, what comes to mind? Some might say Twilight Princess for its dark imagery and otherwise mature rating. Others would say Majora’s Mask for its adult themes and somber atmosphere. Breath of the Wild could even be considered the darkest for its tragic background and looming reminder of past failures. Well Jacob Geller, a content creator on YouTube, has decided to combat this frequent question among the community. What is the darkest Zelda? His answer? All of them.

In Geller’s forty-minute video essay, he establishes the question and answers it right off the bat. Twilight Princess is the darkest, Majora’s Mask is the darkest, Breath of the Wild is the darkest. The same goes with The Wind Waker, Ocarina of Time, Skyward Sword, Link’s Awakening. The list goes on and on. Examining the way we approach media as children only to come back to it later in life, Geller beautifully provides us insight on the things that we miss and appreciate more about the titles we love. “Every Zelda game is the darkest,” he says, and he proves that by examining multiple titles (and Animorphs for you fans of Katherine Applegate out there). We not only get to be educated on what makes these games dark, but how that darkness is effective to both kids and adults. He tells us how, even through each games’ darkness, there’s always light and humor just waiting to be recognized and appreciated just as much.

If you have forty minutes to spare, I suggest you check out Jacob Geller’s video on YouTube along with his other videos as well. He’s done just as effective essays on IPs such as Dead Space, Dark Souls, Final Fantasy, and, my personal favorite, Shadow of the Colossus. Make sure to tell us what you thought of the video below once you check it out!
