Despite being released more than twenty years ago, The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask remains one of the most haunting and beautiful experiences in video games. The game is centered around complex themes like mortality and grief,  and I would argue that the haunting “Song of Healing” is key to setting up these themes and adding emphasis to them. This song is first taught to Link by The Happy Mask Salesman, who uses it to transform Link from a Deku Scrub back to his Hylian form.

This wonderful piano arrangement of “Song of Healing” by Thomandy Piano captures the mystery and beauty of the iconic song. This is a crystal clear solo piano version of the classic song, with each note getting its proper emphasis. One of the reasons I enjoy this song so much is its tempo. While many important Zelda songs are fast paced, “Song of Healing” is slower and more methodical.  Some of the most powerful cutscenes in Majora’s Mask are connected to the song including moving moments with Darmani, Mikau, and Pamela’s Father.

In Thomandy Piano‘s video, the music of “Song of Healing” is accompanied by a fan animation centered on the Happy Mask Salesman and Skull Kid. The video opens with the ominous title “Night of the First Day,” implying that the event seen in the video is set before the start of the game. The animation focuses on the Happy Mask Salesman (seen from behind for the entire video) as he slowly paddles a raft towards Skull Kid. The animation makes wonderful use of color, with the dark purple hue of the cavern contrasting with the flickering light of a torch. My favorite moment in the video is when the camera pans to one of the rocky walls, revealing a gossip stone/Sheikah eye and a mysterious message etched on the wall. It feels like Thomandy Piano slipped in a clever mystery for fans to wonder about.
