Although Breath of the Wild is one of the Zelda games that incorporates a lot of technology, the setting still feels more akin to the Middle Ages than current industrial eras of today. The Sheikah technology in Breath of the Wild has a distinct look that adds to the fantasy setting without detracting from it. It takes inspiration from modern times in reality through things like tablets, while still giving it an ancient feel. The developers made it clear that this technology belongs to a different world than ours.

The Zelda fandom, however, has on occasion taken the franchise out of its setting in fan art or fan fiction, reworking the characters into an alternate universe or “AU”. A new animation in particular reimagines the characters of Link and Zelda in a more modern setting. The animation, titled “texting: a zelink fan animation,” has many small details that reference Breath of the Wild, but it follows the narrative of a budding romantic relationship between Link and Zelda. Yet, instead of knight attendant escapades and heroic gestures, the two engage in common and relatable texting blunders and anxieties.

Animated by Sharlene Yap with sound effects from Breath of the Wild and zapsplat.com, the animation also features Wolf Link texting stickers that are currently available on Telegram, Discord, iMessage, and WhatsApp. To support Sharlene, you can find her on Youtube, Twitter, and Ko-fi.
