Two of my favorite video game series in the world are The Legend of Zelda and Pokémon. Artist William Cole, who goes by hyrule.region on Instagram, has taken these two popular franchises and mashed them up into the ultimate collaboration. In a project that they have named “Link Dimension,” the artist has set out to create a series of “Fakemon’s” combining creatures from the popular gaming series. If you’re unfamiliar with Fakemons, they are fan-created Pokémon, not existing real Pokémon. Both Zelda and Pokémon are celebrating milestone anniversaries — Zelda with its 35th and Pokémon with its 25th — so it’s really awesome to see these two series coming together in an artistic way.

The artist has the used source material very resourcefully, and it’s easy to tell what monsters from Hyrule and what Pokémon have been melded together to create something new. I absolutely love the originality of this project and I can’t wait to see more of these mashups. My personal favorites are Bakumausu and Navixy. There is so much talent on display here and the mashup is done so well, it makes you wonder if Zelda-inspired Pokémon might ever become a reality?
