Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom‘s versions of Link and Zelda have quickly become a couple that many Zelda fans adore. While Nintendo has remained vague on the exact nature of their relationship, many fans have interpreted their relationship as romantic (including myself). Artists and writers within the Zelda community have spent a lot of time and effort imagining and exploring the relationship between Link and Zelda. It is amazing to see all the great art and animations that showcase Link and Zelda as a couple, and these incredible creations make me wish Nintendo was willing to be more definitive about Link and Zelda’s relationship status.
This adorable fan animation by shar (titled “candy: a zelink fan animation”) is a wonderful exploration of the awkward early stages of Link and Zelda’s relationship. This two minute animation is an evolution of some of shar’s previous animations, which imagine Link and Zelda in the modern world. The video opens with Zelda hurrying to class, where she ends up sitting next to Link. The couple share an adorable moment where Zelda offers Link a pencil, and Link gives Zelda a Chuchu candy before he leaves the lecture hall. From there, the viewer is treated to a hilarious scene between Zelda and Purah in a lab. Finally, the animation wraps up with some heartwarming scenes of Link and Zelda texting each other.
Overall, this video is filled with wonderful references and tributes to different aspects of the Zelda series. For example, the writing utensil that Zelda gives to Link features Wolf Link from Twilight Princess. Another great little detail is the fact that Zelda has a Hestu plushie on her nightstand in her bedroom. I also enjoyed that shar depicted Link and Zelda’s teacher as a Gerudo woman, complete with stylish gold earrings and bracelets.
If you enjoyed this animation by shar, the animator has a variety of other Zelda-themed animations on their YouTube channel. My favorite animation by shar is titled “commute,” and it showcases a small but sweet moment between Zelda and Link on a train.
What do you think of this new Zelda animation by shar? What other scenarios or scenes would you like shar to animate? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!
