The Zelda series is full of vibrant starting areas that make you feel right at home. From the lush Kokiri Forest in Ocarina of Time to the majestic islands of Skyloft in Skyward Sword, there are plenty of places I would pack my bags for and visit in a heartbeat. There are, however, a few in-game starter locales that don’t quite make my bucket list. Hyrule in A Link Between Worlds/A Link to the Past, for instance, doesn’t quite hit…

Originally released in 2002 as a pre-order bonus for The Wind Waker, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time Master Quest is a revised version of the beloved 1998 classic. Ocarina‘s overworld, characters, towns, and story all remain intact, while the dungeons were completely overhauled. Existing rooms were shuffled, new puzzles were created, and optional items were made mandatory. The entire game is also mirrored, a simple change that works surprisingly well at freshening up the game and disorienting experienced…

Another year has come and gone, and with it, one of the Zelda franchise’s biggest years in recent memory. This year marked so many things for The Legend of Zelda, not least of all the release of the long-awaited Tears of the Kingdom. After four long years of delays, theories, and sparse trailers which were few and far between, we finally got to experience the sequel to 2017’s revolutionary Breath of the Wild. Still, that’s barely scratching the surface. Shortly…

First introduced to the Zelda world 32 years ago, the Blade of Evil’s Bane, AKA the Master Sword has been a key staple in the series in nearly every game since. Though its powers and abilities have seen some small changes over the past few decades, it is still the key item used to help vanquish any darkness that threatens Hyrule. With what is considered to be one of the most iconic weapons in video game history at the helm of…

What makes a game deserving of a remake? Maybe hardware limitations hindered a game from reaching its full potential. Maybe the gameplay mechanics haven’t stood the test of time, or the controls are dated and foreign to a modern audience. Maybe the story is worth retelling in an entirely new genre. Maybe a new hardware feature presents an opportunity to enhance the game in an exciting way. There is a plethora of reasons why a game might be worthy of…

One of the most adored elements of all Zelda games has been its music. Is it even more revered than Zelda‘s legendary dungeons? That’s a debate for another time. However, some of the most noteworthy songs from the franchise don’t come from its puzzling levels and lairs, but other environments instead — think of the areas where we learn songs like “Kokiri Forest,” “The Great Sea,” and “Ballad of the Goddess.” So, I think it’s healthy to annually revisit what…

One of the more unique exhibits at PAX West 2023 is the Art of Nintendo Power gallery. The exhibit features several dozen framed pages from a range of issues of Nintendo Power, part of a private collection from video game preservation advocate and gaming historian Stephan Reese, who started the non-profit Interactive Art Collection to assist with these endeavors. Getting a chance to chat with him as he personally guided us through the exhibits was a privilege I won’t soon forget. Growing…
