With the advent of Lofi Girl and similar projects, lo-fi is this generation’s most accessible and malleable form of musical expression. The number of Zelda-related projects in this space is inspiring, which is why we have to highlight this awesome album called Hylian Serenity: A Chill Tribute to Ocarina of Time by Sanjesh P. The eight-track album features one fan-favorite after another. The tracklist includes:  “Title Theme (Chillhop Remix)” “Fairy Fountain (Synth Remix)” “Zelda’s Lullaby (Acoustic Cover)” “Lost Woods (Chillhop…

Welcome back to another edition of “Storytelling Through Sound,” a series of editorials dedicated to the analysis of the main themes from every Zelda game. In honor of Four Swords Week, we’ll be taking a look at this game’s version of the Lake Hylia theme and the way that it plays into nostalgia to hit you right in the feels. One of my favorite parts of playing a Zelda game is being unexpectedly hit with something familiar from the past, whether it be a…

As we encroach on Tears of the Kingdom’s first anniversary, there is no better time to celebrate its monumental wins than now. After winning IGN’s Game of the Year, Best Action/Adventure Game at The Game Awards and D.I.C.E., Link and Zelda should be flying higher than the Great Sky Island. Tears also received BAFTA nominations and Game Informer recognition as a top game of the year. This isn’t even an exhaustive list, but it’s time to add another medal to…

Lookout Landing has one of the more charming tracks in Tears of the Kingdom with its staccato piano chords and trilling whistles. Its whimsy combined with a somewhat militaristic quality has so much potential for creatively constructed covers, especially as the last few Zelda titles experimented with using more types of instruments. Nick Zhang is a talented woodwind musician who created a delightfully faithful cover of the music heard at Lookout Landing. It sounds so on-point and natural it could…

Update: Pre-orders for the Blood Moon Rising fan zine have been extended to March 31st, according to the project’s X account. The extension comes as the project’s final stretch goal was unlocked this past Thursday. John LortieJohn’s been a Zelda fan since he was seven years old (which was a good few decades ago). He loves the last three months of the year, analog media, his family, and Tolkien. His favorite Zelda game is Breath of the Wild and his favorite game is Night in the…

Because we are coming up on almost a year since Tears of the Kingdom‘s release (can you believe it?), I’ve been pondering how well this direct sequel to Breath of the Wild continued the original story and enriched that version of Hyrule. I, for one, loved the continuity elements between the two games and enjoyed seeing how familiar settings were changed over a few years (how NPCs had grown up, etc). Tears of the Kingdom is a rarity in the…

The Zelda series is full of vibrant starting areas that make you feel right at home. From the lush Kokiri Forest in Ocarina of Time to the majestic islands of Skyloft in Skyward Sword, there are plenty of places I would pack my bags for and visit in a heartbeat. There are, however, a few in-game starter locales that don’t quite make my bucket list. Hyrule in A Link Between Worlds/A Link to the Past, for instance, doesn’t quite hit…

With Mario, Donkey Kong, and now Animal Crossing receiving official LEGO sets, many Zelda fans (myself included) are likely wondering the same thing: where are the Zelda LEGO sets? With how popular LEGO builds are and how well Tears of the Kingdom has been received since its release last year, creating Zelda-themed LEGOs seems like a no-brainer! While there hasn’t been an official announcement that any such set is in development, there have been rumors circulating around a potential Deku Tree…

How do you define atmosphere? While it may be hard to describe in simple terms, it is certainly something that we all recognize and feel. Atmosphere is a complex concept because of how many things influence it. Many of these influences may also be perceived differently from player to player, giving them each unique experiences with a game. At its core though, atmosphere is a conglomerate of aesthetic, lighting, music, gameplay, pacing, difficulty, and countless other factors that all contribute…

From the early days of using the magic Flute to reveal secrets in The Legend of Zelda, to swinging your Wii Remote around to play the Harp in Skyward Sword, it’s pretty evident that music has played a pivotal role in the Zelda franchise since the beginning. With such a key part of this franchise being its instruments, it’s safe to say that it was a huge surprise to have them removed with the release of Breath of the Wild. While the…
