Cadence of Hyrule, the upcoming crossover between Brace Yourself Games’ Crypt of the NecroDancer and The Legend of Zelda, came as a surprise during the Nindies Direct back in March. Many of us were probably wondering what the extent of Nintendo’s involvement would be with this action roguelike title. Recently, during an interview with Japanese website 4Gamer, developers of Cadence of Hyrule touched on what it was like collaborating with Nintendo on the game.

Oliver Trujillo, Cadence of Hyrule‘s lead designer and programmer, and Toshihisa Nikaido of Spike Chunsoft (the game’s Japanese publisher) opened up about working with Nintendo on the upcoming crossover:

4Gamer: Thank you for your time today. I’d like to jump right in to hearing about what led to the creation of Cadence of Hyrule.

Nikaido: Originally the project started as an idea that we could perhaps collaborate with The Legend of Zelda as downloadable content for NecroDancer. When we brought that project to Nintendo, the discussion continuously gathered momentum, until it finally became: “At this rate, why not just make it an independent game?”

4Gamer: What was the feeling when that discussion ballooned into the decision to create Cadence of Hyrule?

Trujillo: I was super excited, of course! I thought it was really incredible that we would be able to make a collaboration with the Legend of Zelda series, which I’ve been playing since I was a kid, into a reality. Only, on the other hand, there was also apprehension about collaborating with a series which has continued to garner so many fans over its more-than-30-year history. We’ve worked hard to do our very best to create something able to meet the expectations of the fans of both NecroDancer and The Legend of Zelda.”

Interestingly, the developers of Cadence of Hyrule went on to say that Nintendo gave careful supervision over the game in regards to the aspects involving The Legend of Zelda:

4Gamer: Did Nintendo have any special requirements in order to make the collaborative title?

Trujillo: They gave us very careful oversight regarding the representation and setting of the Triforce. We were told on very clear terms that they wanted this game to preserve the settings and mystical elements as they’ve been established for the series up till now.”

It’s great to hear that the developers of Cadence of Hyrule have a lot of enthusiasm for the Zelda series and did their best to make a game to please fans of Crypt of The NecroDancer and Zelda alike.

Cadence of Hyrule is slated for a June release. With the game just around the corner, are you excited to see the finished product? Share your thoughts below!
