Cadence of Hyrule is a forthcoming indie rhythm video game developed by Brace Yourself Games.  The roguelike Zelda spinoff is birthed from the collaboration between the video game series The Legend of Zelda and Crypt of the NecroDancer, and is slated for release on the Nintendo Switch in June 2019.

Developers behind Cadence of Hyrule recently gave an interview with Japanese website 4Gamer, who wanted to about changes to the existing game system from NecroDancer. Lead designer and programmer Oliver Trujillo and CEO of Brace Yourself Games Ryan Clark explained that although the rhythm style gameplay has been retained, other features associated with The Legend of Zelda had been added to the mix:

4Gamer: It’s really evident that everyone on your team has a love of The Legend of Zelda.  Now, you mentioned earlier that this game features exploration of not only dungeons but also overworld settings. Please share any other changes to the game system from NecroDancer.

Clark:  The core mechanic of having to move according to the rhythm has not changed from the previous game, but I think the feeling of the gameplay has changed quite a bit. For example, the concept of topographical Elevation Difference has been introduced in this game, which you can make use of in combat.

Trujillo:  Also, when you think of The Legend of Zelda, one characteristic is the Puzzle Solving sprinkled all throughout the world, so we’ve also introduced riddle solving features and puzzles to this game as well. It’s been designed to enjoy the feeling of asking, “What do I need to do to get to that spot?” while looking at your weapons, items, and surrounding environment. “

When asked about which Zelda titles were their favorite, Trujillo explained why A Link to the Past holds his top-spot, while Clark admitted to having two favorites:

4Gamer: Speaking of that, what are both of your favorite titles from the Legend of Zelda series?

Trujillo:  My favorite is A Link to the Past. The first one I played was the original Legend of Zelda on the NES (Famicon), but the world of A Link to the Past was much larger than that of the original. On top of that, when I first entered the Dark Realm, I was even more surprised that “this world is even bigger than I thought!” And that was a title I enjoyed playing with great excitement.

Clark:  I have two favorites. My favorite older title is Adventure of Link. I absolutely love the action, starting with the downward thrust. And I love the recent title Breath of the Wild. The scope of exploration is so vast, and I had an awesome time playing it.”

As fans of the franchise, it would seem as though the developers of Cadence of Hyrule will want to stay true to the level of gameplay that has come to be expected from any Zelda game. They clearly understand just how important mechanics such as puzzle solving and environment are to the exploration of a world like Hyrule, so I am confident that this game will not let us down.
