Vancouver-based gaming developer Brace Yourself Games has confirmed that their company has laid off a portion of its employees. The gaming company became popular in 2015 with the release of Crypt of the NecroDancer, and they later developed the popular rhythm game based upon The Legend of Zelda, Cadence of Hyrule, that released Summer of 2019. The layoffs were initially reported by Game Developer, which cited tweets by a former employee that the layoffs effected half of the company’s workforce. In a statement made to PC Gamer, Brace Yourself Games states:

“This decision was not made lightly, as we deeply value our talented and dedicated employees. As part of our commitment to our employees, we are providing severance packages and support services to assist those impacted by this decision. We are also working to address the impact on our remaining team members and to ensure that we continue to meet the needs of our players”

Other companies across industries have been following suit, but it’s always sad to hear when gaming developers are having to let staff go and perhaps shelve unannounced projects.

Despite the layoffs the studio continues to push forward with development of Crypt of the Necrodancer: Synchrony DLC, Rift of the Necrodancer, Phantom Brigade and one unannounced game. Full support continues to be provided for titles published under Brace Yourself Publishing as well.

What are your opinions on Brace Yourself Games layoffs? Are you looking forward to any of the games that they still have in development? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
