Due to the Wii U’s lackluster performance, even the most avid Nintendo fans have worried about the state of the company compared to its competition, especially after a controversial E3 showing that some people found disappointing. But many optimists have looked to 2016 with hope, anticipating the release of the new NX console, Nintendo’s plans to tap into the mobile market, and the upcoming Zelda U. As Reggie Fils-Aime said, there are going to be changes at Nintendo, and people are looking forward to what those changes might be.

That said, even though Nintendo has promised change, a business insider writing for International Business Times has cited installments and sequels of popular Nintendo franchises and games as key to Nintendo’s future success. In his view, NIntendo is not failing as a company but merely going through a slump it can easily bounce back from if it capitalizes on past successes. The first franchise he lists as a contender to boost Nintendo’s future prospects is The Legend of Zelda. The article cites the upcoming Zelda U with its “fully open world” as a likely “first major departure from formula since Ocarina of Time” that he hopes will “make the most of whatever new technology is available to create the kind of Zelda game people have long-dreamed of playing.” He also strongly believes Zelda U, like Twilight Princess, will receive a dual console release on the NX and Wii U.

Other releases the author cites as key for Nintendo’s future success include another Pokemon Stadium sequel on the next major console, which he foresees utilizing Amiibo; another Super Mario Galaxy sequel with an epic scope; a Metroid installment that (unlike the latest installment) features Samus and draws from the Western sci-fi tradition to deepen its lore; and Animal Crossing on mobile, among others.

What do you think of this business insider’s opinions and ideas? Do you, like him, think Nintendo is just going through a slump and will easily be revived by drawing from its classic franchises and past successes? Will Zelda U be the new release Nintendo needs to have an edge over the competition? Let us know below.
