I’ve been playing through the Legend of Zelda timeline recently, and it has helped me relive a lot of my childhood. I also realize that some things are not always as good as I remember. One particular example was my journey through Ocarina of Time. As a kid, it was everything I wanted: big, grandiose, and beautiful. After playing it again on original hardware over 20 years later, I noticed definite cracks in the facade. When I moved to versions on PC, fan modifications helped hide some of these shortcomings. Dedicated fans have found many ways to breathe new life into aging classic games. Some of the most welcome updates were to the very dated visuals of Link’s fifth adventure. Featured on Hard4Games, a new mod from Skilar Babcock dresses Link up in some iconic new armor.

First in the showcase is an update to an existing Twilight Princess themed re-skin. Originally released in 2018, fans had some constructive criticisms of the character models, and Skilar went back to work. The current release features updated faces, textures, and even equipment from Twilight Princess. It’s impressive what he was able to accomplish with the models, and they definitely look like an improvement over vanilla Ocarina of Time. Immediately, you see details like Link wearing chain mail to the intricate designs in his tunic. Additionally, subtler details like Link’s hair have been changed to closer match his Twilight Princess look. Beyond that, one of the cooler (and for me, most welcome) changes is an update to Link’s voice. As Link swings his sword, you’ll hear voice clips from Twilight Princess, really tying the design together. It’s details like this that help keep this look from feeling out of place.

In the second half of the video, we get a sneak peak at an upcoming project from Skilar. Similar to the Twilight Princess character mod, we got a quick preview of a Breath of the Wild texture pack. The look and feel is similar to that of the other mod, but the changes are pretty evident. Gone is the usual green tunic, replaced with the new blue Guardian tunic. Skilar paid special attention to the the intricate white design along the edges of the tunic. Not only that, but details down to Link’s hair and earring are faithfully included in this character model. Of course, it’s a work in progress, but I suspect there will be work on some weapon designs, and possibly even voice work. Clearly, Skilar and his team are set on delivering quality content that still fits in the world of Ocarina of Time.

How do you feel about mods like this within Zelda games? Are you impressed with Skilar’s work? What kind of game mods do you look for to bring new life to an old game? Let us know in the comments!
