In times of trouble, it helps to have inspirational figures to look up to and emulate. “We Can Do It!” posters featuring a now iconic American female factory worker showing off her strength (commonly dubbed “Rosie the Riveter” given her association with pop-culture characterizations emerging in music and art during the time period) have been repurposed ever since World War II to help people feel empowered to tackle tough challenges and rally around common causes. It was even frequently reimagined on social media to help instill resilience within overworked and understaffed medical teams and in everyday people trying to survive working from home, particularly during the first few months of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Like Rosie, Princess Zelda is one of my favorite figures of empowerment, across all of her incarnations. I love her sense of composure, bravery, and selflessness in Twilight Princess, her sweet, chaotic energy in Skyward Sword, her snarkiness and independence as Tetra in The Wind Waker, and her scientific curiosity and relatable sense of teenage humanity in Breath of the Wild. One thing I’m hoping for in Breath of the Wild 2 is more screen time for her and possibly even some play time (a girl can dream), because I never feel like I get quite enough of her character to explore. I want to stand in her Hylian shoes and feel her agency in the story.

This is why I adore this “We Can Do It!” Princess Zelda & Sheik illustration from Dani Kuindersma’s Etsy shop, DaniKDraws. Kuindersma’s art features Ocarina of Time’s Princess Zelda and alludes to her role as Sheik throughout the game as she wears a regal white glove on one hand and a blue and white Sheik disguise sleeve on the other. In the art, Zelda embodies Rosie’s prowess and verve, her eyes looking straight at the viewer from under her highly detailed golden locks and royal crown. What are those eyes saying?

With the choice of a white or yellow background, you can get your hands on a copy of Kuindersma’s art and decide for yourself. What’s more, DaniKDraws provides options for all budgets: 4 by 6 inch recycled matte paper postcards for $4.91 USD,  8.5 x 11 inch smooth matte prints for $6.55 USD (you can upgrade to a laminated print for $8.18 USD), or fabulously glossy 11 by 17 inch posters for $31.10 USD). Whichever you choose, your art will be ready to ship to the US, Canada, or internationally in just a few days by letter mail or with tracking.

Go check out DaniKDraws’ awesome Zelda and Sheik print and peruse other fandom-related wares over at their Etsy shop. You can also show Kuindersma support by following them on Twitter or Instagram.

What do you think of DaniKDraws’ “We Can Do It!” Zelda & Sheik illustration? While I absolutely love the Zelda and Sheik combo, I’m having fun imagining even more versions of Zelda striking the Rosie pose. (I would personally be very partial to Breath of the Wild 2‘s Zelda depicted while sporting her new haircut). For now, I can’t wait for my laminated print to arrive so I can hang it up in my office to help me get through those afternoon energy slumps. Which edition do you think you’ll grab first?
