Information just jam-packed in the latest GameSpot interview with Zelda series boss Eiji Aonuma. We have learned that he is considering a replacement for himself, and that the next remake will be decided by the fans. Now we have learned Aonuma would like to use amiibo in a future title, possibly a Zelda one.

Aonuma reveals that amiibo were almost going to be compatible with Majora’s Mask 3D, but the idea was eventually scrapped due to the type of gameplay that Majora’s Mask contains. He even said that a Skull Kid amiibo was considered, much like the Special Edition statue pictured above.

Here’s an excerpt of Aonuma speaking during the GameSpot interview:

We really did want to do amiibo, like with Skull Kid, that would work with Majora’s Mask. But one of the things that was really difficult was, because this was a remake of the game, we didn’t have the opportunity to build the kind of gameplay that would connect to using an amiibo in this way. Ultimately, and unfortunately, we had to back off of that idea.

But looking forward, I really want to do something like that on a new title. So I hope you’re going to look forward to that.

It’s really a shame that amiibo couldn’t have been incorporated into MM3D, but let’s hope that a Skull Kid amiibo is still possible. Would you like to see a Skull Kid amiibo? Let us know in the comments.
