aonuma Since it was revealed at this year’s E3, the new Zelda title for the Wii U has many fans excited and wondering what it will be like. Recently, Mases of Zelda Dungeon and GenGAME sat down with Eiji Aonuma where he stated that a previous Zelda game’s success does not change the direction he wants to take for new entries in the series.

Take the jump to see Aonuma’s full quote!

Mases Hagopian: Two years ago you showed the tech-demo for Zelda. It had more of a Twilight Princess look and Hyrule Warriors has somewhat carried that same design. Twilight Princess though was one of the most traditional games, but it was also one of the most successful games. Does a game’s success, in terms of sales numbers, does that affect the type of Zelda game that you personally like to create?

Eiji Aonuma: I don’t look back. (laughs)

I always want to create something unique, and the reason for that is not just because it makes for a more fun game experience once the game is completed, but as a creator it also makes things more interesting for my team and myself. Images and expressions and all of those things, in order to make those unique, we don’t start with a plan that is set in stone from the beginning, it’s definitely an evolution. We may have a basic concept in the beginning, but as we are working through those concepts, they are going to evolve, they are going to change. So that’s how that particular tech demo you saw early on has evolved to what you saw in the trailer.

This is exciting, as it means Aonuma is willing to take risks and try new things in the Zelda series. Nintendo has been heavily criticized for rehashing old series, so we can expect the new Zelda game to be refreshing entry into the series. Given its open-world concept, and that it will diverge away from old Zelda mechanics, Zelda for the Wii U is already shaping up to be a fantastic new entry into the series.

This quote also may play into whether or not a Majora’s Mask remake is on the horizon. One major argument that a remake will not happen is that the original did not sell as well as the other games in the series that got the remake treatment. However, if sales figures do not restrict where Aonuma takes the Zelda series, that opens the door for a Majora’s Mask remake.

What do you think? Are you excited to see the new ways Aonuma takes the Zelda series? Do you think we will see a Majora’s Mask remake soon?
