AonumaIt is a well known fact that the Legend of Zelda isn’t a type of game series that has a new release every year. Many years can go by and there will be no new Zelda game for its fans to play. Some fans can find this to be annoying and wish that there was less of a time span in between the games. Fans usually tend to think that some of the reasons it takes a long time is because either that the developers are making sure the game has high quality before releasing it or that they are still in the development stages of it. However the case, it still makes one wonder exactly what it is their doing.

Because of this, in a recent interview that Shack News had with series producer, Eiji Aonuma, they asked the question of why it takes so long to develop the games. His simple answer was that it was due to quality.

Eiji Aonuma: “Ocarina of Time was the first 3D Zelda game. When you make a 3D game, you have all these 3D models. But in a 2D game, you’re drawing all these 2D images. Even if you wanted to make another game right away, if the background is different, you actually end up having to re-draw everything. But in a 3D game, you can put those 3D models in different backgrounds and animate them. So Mr. Miyamoto thought ‘well, actually shouldn’t this make it easier for us to make a sequel?’

I think before, we did maybe try to make Zelda games come out faster. But there’s so much expected of Zelda titles now, so you have to reach a certain level of quality, so that’s why we started to take a bit more time now. I don’t think it’s necessary that development needs to be longer. But to reach a certain level of quality, there’s just a certain amount of time that’s needed. Obviously, the company is telling me that I need to put games out as quickly as possible.

It’s not like we feel like we have a duty to get one out a year. Right now, we’re able to split ourselves between the handheld and console games and have two teams. I think we’re pretty efficient in getting games out on a regular interval.”

I can understand the sentiment of wanting Zelda games to get developed faster, but at the same time I understand that it takes time to make something of good quality. I think that every game they’ve released for the series thus far has that good quality and I don’t want them to potentially compromise that in order to release something quickly. It may annoy me a little bit by knowing that it will take a while longer, but it’s as the saying goes, ‘Good things come to those who wait.’
