Aki’s Pixel Pets: Cuccos and their real world equivalent

The Cucco is one of the most lethal enemies in the Zelda series. While initially docile and not afraid of people, picking them will spook them and have them run away. If you attack them, and heavens forbid that you do, you can expect Link to die a very painful and fluttery poultry-induced death if you don’t escape quickly. All the way from A Link to the Past to Hyrule Warriors these feathered fiends have been Link’s allies, obstacles and even quest items. But did you know that there is a real life equivalent of the Cucco? Sure, they don’t tear people apart if they are bothered too much, but they exist. Akiterra, the wife of Gaijin Goombah, has started a new web series called Aki’s Pixel Pets in which she takes a look at various animals in video games. On the first episode she takes a look at the Cucco, and you can watch the video below!

The similarities between the Cucco and the Plymouth Rock are surprising, but if this is merely a coincidence or a deliberate thing is unknown. Perhaps Miyamoto knew a few things about chickens from his youth because he grew up in a rural area, or one of the designers grew up on a farm. Or perhaps it’s just one of those cosmic coincidences that people insist to milk as a deliberate choice, who knows?
