As of February 2, 2014, A Link to the Past is at the top of this week’s Wii U eShop charts as the most downloaded game software. This doesn’t really come as too much of a surprise because the game is considered by many to be one of the best games of all time and it’s definitely getting some new attention from its new sequel, A Link Between Worlds.

A Link to the Past was released on the Wii’s Virtual Console on January 22, 2007. Since the game’s initial release on April 13, 1992 it has sold 4.61 million units worldwide – 2.42 million just in North America. Just as interesting though, The Wind Waker HD is second on the chart for the most downloaded. Many fans have jumped at the chance to download the game as soon as possible and have given it much attention since it was released. The Wind Waker HD has sold 0.82 million copies worldwide – 0.47 million in North America alone. Number 10 on the list is the original The Legend of Zelda, released over 25 years ago with 6.51 million copies sold.

Even though The Legend of Zelda has sold 6.51 million, Ocarina of Time still reigns supreme with 7.6 million sales. This doesn’t even count Ocarina of Time 3D, which has sold 3.1 million copies, making Ocarina of Time the best selling game in the franchise. Over all, the Zelda franchise has been responsible for over 52 million video game sales worldwide!

These impressive numbers are quite a feat for Nintendo! I wonder if any new games that come out could ever beat Ocarina of Time‘s sales? Comment below on what kind of game you think has potential for becoming the new best seller!
