The Legend of Zelda series, like many of the popular NES games of the 80’s, has expanded into newer territory and evolved with its gameplay, mechanics, and rich mythology. One of the most notable aspects of the series that has continued to change and evolve is its music. What began as an ordinary soundtrack that played along with the game just as any other at the time gained a high level of popularity as the series progressed. As later games…

Time is concept that is very common within the Legend of Zelda series; with 16 installments over 27 years, the series has brought us a total of six games which have used the idea of time in some manner. Time has also played a factor in the grand scheme of Zelda in the form of the timeline itself. Ocarina of Time has three alternate outcomes — two of which were a consequence of Princess Zelda sending Link back in time…

Zelda stories have changed. You could make the argument that many follow the same framework, with a princess being captured at some point, a villain wreaking havoc, and a world to save. Medallions or other relics might play a role in unlocking something somewhere. However, you could also take a look first at the original, 8-bit Legend of Zelda, where most of the character interaction consisted of talking to old men who were disconnected from the rest of the world,…

Don’t you think it’s perfect that the cover of Hyrule Historia’s English version is green? Don’t get me wrong, the ancient brown look of the original cover, making it look like an old tome, was pretty awesome and, I’m not knocking it. But the green is perfect, and not just because it’s Link’s color. Surely I can’t be the only person who’s reminded of the Book of Mudora from A Link to the Past? I realize that might sound like…

Genre is a peculiar thing. While most works have a clearly identifiable genre, people often disagree about precisely what that genre is; a film may be classified as action, adventure, superhero, thriller, or even film noir depending on who you ask. But despite this variation in perceived genre, none of these responses are wrong, because – like most things – genre can’t be objectively defined. At base, genre refers to a category that a work of art can be placed…

The land of Hyrule has always been a very diverse realm with a large variety of peoples and monsters living throughout. A very common aspect of the Zelda series is there being a clear distinction between a friendly NPCs that will talk to Link and cannot be attacked, and unfriendly enemy NPCs, which almost never speak and only exist as opponents to be defeated. This does not account for everyone, as there are the occasional exceptions on both sides. Nonetheless,…

Hey guys! New mailbag! Got a fair number of broad questions this time, covering wider topics relating to the series in general, but we’ve also got a pair of A Link to the Past questions this time, which is cool because we don’t see that a ton. Two Skyward Sword questions as well. And one that seems inspired by a joke I made on the Halloween mailbag! 11 questions in all. Enjoy! You can watch the video here or check…
