Is Navi really a pest?

September 21 2013 by Parker

“Hey, Listen!” Who could have predicted in 1998 that these two innocent words, articulated by a winged ball of light, would become the bane of countless Zelda fans? Yet besides Kaepora Gaebora’s notoriously long-winded speeches, the infamous catchphrase of Link’s fairy companion Navi is probably the most common points of criticism leveled at Ocarina of Time. Detractors claim her often-repeated exclamations are unbearable; her personality obnoxious. Not even Tingle is demonized to such an extent. When faced with such vocal and ingrained…

I always thought the Great Deku Tree seemed familiar. Perhaps I saw him in a children’s book as young lad, but without the bushy brows and mustache, though the tree was quite generous. Just kidding. Many of you have probably read The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein at some point in your childhood, a well known classic that taught us the value of giving and being thankful. Available on Sanshee for $19.99, this lovely shirt strongly resembles the cover of The…

There are many species in the Zelda series which have unknown methods of reproduction. Three of these species have picked at my curiosity in particular, the Gorons, the Deku race, and the Kokiri. There are many theories as to how Gorons reproduce, and none for the Deku race or the Kokiri. I shall go through these theories, suggest my own, and at the end, you can tell me the races in the Zelda series which you have always wondered about,…

Most Zelda fans were introduced to the world of Hyrule by starting off in the gorgeous Kokiri Forest; at least I was. I’m sure plenty of readers remember slotting in the masterpiece of Ocarina of Time into their Nintendo 64 console and, for the first time, control Link in a full 3D environment. Kokiri Forest was the perfect introduction for newcomers and old-timers to start a Zelda adventure because of its spacious, beautiful environment, joyous themes of its inhabitants, the…

Deku Tree Wallets

[news post contributed by Michael P.] Deep within the Kokiri Forest is a kid with a lot of rupees. The best place too keep all of them would be within a nice leather wallet, handmade one by one with some very talented hands. The wallet has both the image of the Great Deku Tree and the symbol that was on the wooden shield from Ocarina of Time. After tooling each image by hand, the wallets are dyed to shade the…

Zelda the Musical

April 13 2012 by Ally Paige

It’s always good to see different types of materials made by Zelda fans. YouTuber mitchellmoffit has created a wonderful music video based on Ocarina of Time. It begins with Link learning about his destiny from the Great Deku Tree and continues to show a brief battle between Link and Ganondorf. There’s even a short disagreement between Zelda and Malon over who deserves to be Link’s girlfriend. If you want to watch the video yourself, check it out after the jump….

What seems to be a pretty clear Zelda reference can be found in the newest Castlevania game, Lords of Shadow. The screenshot below mentions a Great “Dekuh” which was “the most gorgeous tree in the forest” and its “magical power protected the forest from the attacks of dark creatures”. If you haven’t figured it out yet, it seems like a pretty clear reference to the Great Deku Tree from Ocarina of Time, and later The Wind Waker. Whether this was…
