The game that started it all, the reason why we all had the opportunity to become Zelda fanatics, The Legend of Zelda was a deliberately crafted masterpiece from the beginning of its production. The game was meant to counterbalance Mario’s gameplay style by being open-ended, story-focused, and require players to think critically. It was the first home console game to save players’ progress, it took inspiration from Miyamoto’s childhood as well as high fantasy novels, and it contained only six…

This is a question that has lingered in the minds of fans for a very long time. The value of these odd little gems of various colors that Link shoves into his magic pockets is obvious based on their colors, but only in Hyrule. A while back, MatPat over on Game Theory determined the value of every individual rupee Link collects. He is actually joined by PeanutButterGamer, in a collaboration celebrating his yearly Zelda Month video series. How much do…

Austin “PeanutButterGamer” Hargrave’s fifth annual Zelda Month continues with not only the first countdown of the lot, but also a deeper look at an infamous cult gem. The former, specifically, is a collaborative video in which he and Game Theory’s Matthew Patrick run down their least favorite pieces of equipment from throughout the series. From downright useless items such as the Deku Nuts to those with particularly frustrating properties — I’m looking at you, Giant’s Knife — it’s a solid…

Just over a month ago, Game Theory took its first look at how Majora’s Mask and the many masks therein have been influenced by African culture. As it turned out there were quite a few parallels with how masks are used by the many different peoples in Africa. For the second video, Gaijin Goombah takes a look at a number of masks that have to do with interacting with others: the difficult to obtain Couple’s Mask, the masks that allow…

Over the course of his adventures Link has used many different kinds of weapons and items to help him defeat evil. Swords, bows, boomerangs, bombs: you name it.  A Link to the Past introduced a new item to both aid in Link’s mobility while serving as a weapon: the Hookshot. The Hookshot has gone through various different iterations to do different things. Today Game Theory takes a look at that last iteration of the item and does the math: what…

Game Theory‘s MatPat has recently posted a video looking at the hookshot and longshot through a scientific lens, trying to figure out exactly what effect it would cause to the human body if used. The video is fascinating, and really has quite a gruesome ending; I never could have imagined the hookshot could be so horrible, it just looks so awesome.

As it turns out, the force it would take to shoot the hookshot (which weighs more than 85 kilograms) would leave Link incapacitated for life…
