In a series like Zelda, with so many foes of every variety — villains, bosses, and regular enemies — it’s no surprise that not all of them are that well fleshed-out. The vast majority of bosses are never elaborated upon, though even as early as A Link to the Past you had a boss with an actual backstory in Blind. The villains, while they often have plenty of story details to their name, can also tend to be very simplistic…

Playing through Ocarina of Time, I was always curious about the boss of the Shadow Temple, Bongo Bongo, and the boss of the Spirit Temple, Twinrova. My curiosity was furthered by finding online theories for Bongo Bongo, and the final words that Twinrova leave Link with after he defeats them in the Spirit Temple. Like my editorial on Bunnio, this will be more interpretive, looking at possible backgrounds and futures of the characters, rather than analysing what the characters are…

“Psychopomp” is a really funny-sounding word that simply refers to a figure or entity who escorts deceased souls to the afterlife. Each psychopomp has different rules, behavior, treatment or transportation of souls, and indeed even send them to different afterlives. With legends about what happens when people die being so prominent in religions both old and new, it should be no surprise that the Zelda series takes a lot of influence from the many psychopomps featured in them. While of…

He warns Link to get back, before a creepy immaterial force comes out of the well and subdues both Link and Sheik. After which, Sheik explains that this “evil shadow spirit” has been released, and Impa has gone to seal it in the Shadow Temple but…

LIMITED CHANCE–ITEM NO LONGER AVAILABLE I have seen some pretty cool Zelda shirts in my time, but today something has trumped most of my favorites. Shirt design website ShirtPunch has a one-day-only special running right now on two shirts: one is a mash-up of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Rosie the Riveter, while the other… well, jump inside to see for yourself!

Ah, the Shadow Temple. It’s now time to review this infamous dungeon. Now, mind you, it’s not nearly as infamous as the Water Temple. People complain about the Water Temple’s design and say it’s repetitive and overly confusing, whereas the Shadow Temple just scares people. Horror is meant to scare, and for some people that’s not fun, so some people won’t like the Shadow Temple (or the Bottom of the Well, by extension), but for others that’s the fun part!…
