Ever since today’s beautiful and mind-blowing Zelda U trailer, a lot of fans have been complaining about one thing: what the hell was up with Link?

We saw our hero, for the first time, without his signature tunic or hat, without his sword, and donning longer hair in a ponytail. Many simply guessed that this was the hero’s new look, or that this was his appearance at the beginning of the game, before acquiring items or more grown-up robes, but Aonuma says that that may not be the case. In fact, the man behind many recent Zelda games suggests that it might not even be Link in the first place.

When asked about Link’s appearance, Aonuma said:

“No one explicitly said that that was Link.”

— Eiji Aonuma

What could this possibly mean? Personally, I think this is a completely different character—a girl, possibly. Maybe a love interest? Maybe Link isn’t even the main character, and we’ll play with this warrior in the trailer? Let us know what you think in the comments!
