Nintendo responded yesterday to some of the questioning around the lack of an A/C adapter being included with the New Nintendo 3DS XL in North America. Sending along an official stance to IGN, they essentially told them that the reason it wasn’t included was to cut costs for the consumer:

“New Nintendo 3DS XL uses the same AC adapter as any Nintendo 3DS or Nintendo DSi system. Rather than raise cost of New Nintendo 3DS XL by charging consumers for a component they may already own, we are giving them the option to only buy if they need an AC adapter.”

Personally, the best solution to me would have been for Nintendo to eat the cost of the adapter as they always have. This seems more like them trying to make how they handle the product universal – an adapter isn’t included in Europe or Japan either, and hasn’t been included for several 3DS models over the past 2 years. This is likely something we’re just going to have stomach, as I would venture to guess this is merely the first step, as there will be other times they won’t include an adapter moving forward.
