Update: Official translations of the shareholders meeting has refuted initial reports regarding Nintendo’s film plans. While the company is open to discussions with potential film partners, it has made no official announcements of any film projects currently in development.

Nintendo has been steadily moving forward with its plans to extend beyond the realm of video games. The company is currently partnering with Universal to produce Nintendo attractions for Universal Studios Japan and, as we learned yesterday, it is currently in talks with a partner with which to make movies together. Though it was safe to assume that Nintendo would make use of its popular IP in these ventures, the company did us favor during last night’s investor meeting by confirming that Nintendo IP would in fact be utilized in “theme parks, character goods, and film contents”…

It certainly is nice to know for sure that Nintendo’s film plans involve some of its popular IP. After last night’s reveal, we weren’t completely certain if the company’s movie plans would feature existing Nintendo IP or something completely new. We may see Mario, Samus, or Link on the silver screen after all.

Additionally, while we’re still left to speculate about Nintendo’s unnamed film partner, the company’s theme park and film plans being mentioned in the same sentence may hint that the partner is Universal. As Nintendo is currently developing a relationship with Universal for theme parks, it makes sense that this relationship could extend to film production as well.

As for “character goods,” we can only guess that the statement is referring to various merchandises based on Nintendo’s characters, such as toys or clothes. Nintendo is no stranger to licensed merchandise, but perhaps the company is taking a more hands-on interest with such products.

Of course, this is all speculation at this point. We won’t know anything for sure until more information is announced, but it seems that Nintendo has some exciting things in store for us in the future.
