Update: Official translations of the shareholders meeting has refuted this report. Kimishima’s statements merely revealed that Nintendo is open to discussions with with potential external partners that might be interested in film projects.

A few months back, Nintendo president Tatsumi Kimishima shared that the company was considering a venture in the film industry. While he did not announce anything official, he did admit that he hoped Nintendo would have its first film ready within two to three years. Well, Kimishima and Nintendo have not swayed from this dream as revealed during today’s Nintendo shareholder meeting. Kimishima shared that Nintendo is currently in talks with an external partner in order to work on films together.

Nintendo president Kimishima had this to say about Nintendo’s future in film production:

“Kimishima: We’re in discussions with a partner to work on films together. People are a valuable resource; each needs to be trained, and the relationships with our external partners are also important.”

As for right now, Nintendo’s partner has not been revealed. But considering the second part of this quote, it seems that Nintendo is working closely with this partner as to maintain the important relationship Kimishima spoke about. Hopefully this will mean that Nintendo will have strong creative control with its film projects, while still acknowledging areas where its people need to be trained.

The fact that Kimishima is so interested in movies fares well for the fans that have been pining for films based on Nintendo’s biggest games. Last month, the Nintendo president acknowledged the “strong demand” for a Zelda film, which may be on the table with Nintendo’s partner. As for now, we can only speculate and anticipate more announcements.

Who do you think Nintendo’s film partner is? What film projects do you want to see Nintendo work on? Let us know in the comments!
