Happy Friday everyone! Well, unless you work weekends. If that’s the case, I feel your pain. Sorry I missed last week’s Fan Fiction Friday. I was away getting married. Two weeks ago, we featured a great story titled “Behind the Mask” by CrimsonVoid. This week, the “mask” theme continues as we recall a suggested story from our fan FCL a few weeks back. “Majora’s Mask’s Origins” by Hylian Harmony explains itself in the title alone. The story fits very well into the dark atmosphere that Majora’s Mask was famous for creating. It fits so well in fact, that I personally could accept this as actual lore. Legends are told whether they are true to history or not, and this story creates something befitting to the series.

From here on, this post is going to contain some slight spoilers. Well, it’s not really spoiling much; but if you want to get everything that the story has to offer, you can read it here. If you don’t care otherwise, here we go.

The story tells of a tribe called the Fahrice who found a home in

Ikana Village. The Fahrice were a tribe of survivors and craftspeople who worshiped the Sun and Moon Spirits, rather than the three Goddesses of Hyrule. Throughout history, the two gods waged war against each other over dominion of the sky. This was the story of their gods. It was also told that men and women would play specific roles in their craft. The men would carve out the wood with their strength and the women would paint the world with delicacy. Legend told of one who would break this rule and lead the tribe to their downfall.

A beautiful young woman named Majora sought to challenge that belief. She wished to be efficient in both arts, believing the legend to be no more than a mere story told by their ancestors to create order and fear. This soon led to the creation of a mask that would be the downfall of a nation and the rise of a hero.

This incredible story has me convinced that this is the true origin of Majora’s Mask. Stories like this are what keep my faith alive in a fading community of fan fiction writers. The creativity and knowledge that it takes to create a piece of work that fits so fluidly into a series we all love is astonishing. There are a lot of gaps in the

Zelda timeline, and seeing those gaps filled with the possibilities imagined by fans of the series keeps it alive in times of drought between new games. I really enjoyed this one and hope you will too.
