Why is that when you sneeze you always have to do it with your eyes closed? Is that just me or does this apply to everyone in the world? Just curious because I was sneezing earlier and just noticed that I couldn't keep my eyes open no matter how hard I tried. D:

Have you tried sneezing and keeping your eyes opened through the process? It is hard, I think no one can do it, but that is just my opinion.

Allegedly, sneezing with your eyes open could knock your eyes right out of your skull. However, I don't have any medical evidence at hand to back that up, and I can only think of one good way to test it... :)

Yes, facts state that the force and speed of the sneeze would make your eyes pop out!

I must say I never paid attention to it because when I sneeze (which is a huge lot lately considering those allergies and hayfever) I'm more annoyed I have to sneeze again. And it goes so fast I don't even recall having my eyes open or closed :P

I don't think your eyes would pop out. It might hurt but it's just not enough force. Anyway, here is what I read about sneezing with open eyes. This site seems to know what they're talking about.

Far as I know everyone sneezes with their eyes shut, me included. I always assumed that was to keep germs out of you eyes... or that the irritation that causes the sneeze makes the nerves or muscles in you eyes to contract. When I feel the sneeze coming on I tend to squint too. I think Limes' link is a good information source.

Yep, I think so too, Keyshe. I also sort squint when I sneeze, I just didn't mention that. Thanks for the link, I was just curious. :D

I remember I only managed once to sneeze with my eyes half closed and I bit my tongue. Not a nice feeling. It is a reflex which happens automatically. It is very hard to keep your eyes open. I don't believe the fairytale your eyes would pop out for a bit. Your eyes are hold in place by muscles and not just one muscle. Your eyelids don't hold them in place, they protect them against dust etc. That's why your eyes are automatically shut down when you sneeze. Just to protect them against germs etc.

Really, you managed to do that? I bet the bite on your tongue hurt. I'll never attempt to sneeze with my eyes open, that's for sure.

Yeah, I suppose logically, your eyelids wouldn't be capable of holding your eyeballs in anyway...

Wouldn't it be weird and creepy to see "popping eyeballs" flying around?

YES. Colds would never be the same again. I somehow think it'd look like something out of a cartoon, but that would be VERY unlikely.

Jumping out and back in you mean? That would be the most funniest thing to see!

I never tried it. Also, I never believed the thing behind your eyeballs popping out of their sockets. They're held in place by muscles (plural, as in "more than one") and the eyelids only protect from dirt and dust and stuff.
