Nine Inch "Nails"

I've had this argument with several different people. The main debate seems to be whether they mean finger"nails" or, like, hammer and "nails". I've also heard theories that it's a reference to their genitalia. Personally, when I first heard it I immediately pictured fingernails, but I'm willing to admit that I could be wrong. Does anyone have a definite answer?

"Reznor said in 1994 that he coined the name "Nine Inch Nails" because it "abbreviated easily", rather than for "any literal meaning"."
