Whjy does everyone say the Water temple in oot is the hardest thing ever? To me it's pretty easy. Well not easy but not hard. Medium. Post your thoughts.

It was pretty easy, especially when I played throught the game a 2nd time. I must have been lucky, because some people say that they used a key in the wrong place, and had to start the game all over again.

It wasnt the fact of using a key in the wrong place but more along the lines of not finding the last dungeon key.
Other than the first time I tried it, I've always found it generally easy. I don't think I've come across many problems with the keys. I usually know where to go if I need one more.

The most trouble I had with it was backtracking to change the water level. Other than that I thought it wasn't to bad.

It never was troubling, more like it was a trial and error thing till you got what you had to do

Its not necessarily the hardest thing ever, just up there in the ranks of hardest temple in OoT. Think about it, the forest and shadow temples were pretty simple. The spirit temple was easy too, just lasted longer. Ganon's Castle wasn't hard, just more challenging when it came to actually doing the things you had to do to progress. The fire temple at times could be confusing and difficult as well, but not near as much back-tracking as was required in the water temple.
The water temple itself had a lot you had to search for, if you didn't find a route that was easy to remember and that you could go through each time you beat it. Personally, I don't play OoT too much these days, and if I were to play through it, I know that the water temple would give me the most trouble.

If you were to take the time and use the dungeon map and compass unlike my self, yes I can say it was difficult. Especially to remmber were all the different rooms were, which ones you've been in and all the back tracking. The temple isn't very big, but its like having 3 different temples in one. With the potental to have the water level at 3 different levels it made some challenges.
If you have played the Master Quest version of the water temple... its the easiest thing in the world. I think I skipped about 3/4's of the temple and went in and destroyed the boss....
hell master quest is so messed up... I forgot how to get into the fire temple, so I went ahead to the water temple and got the long shot. Then used the scarecrow song and entered the fire temple, without doing any of the "entrace quests" in Goron city....
that was a good time.

It's super annoying to navigate and the whole swimming/sinking/water level thing is akward.

I think it was a mixture of the gameplay and the missing key. It just ads up to the annoyance that the level made.
For one, it is a water level. Historically they don't seem to be the most popular of types of levels in Zelda titles. You don't seem like you are in full control of Link when you are swimming, you have a limited arsenal, and water enemies are pretty annoying. The whole water level raising/lowering and switching from the iron boots to the regular boots just built up the annoyance level.
Package the water gameplay with the keys... it made for a very annoying level for most gamers. Annoyance usually translates into difficulty in my opinion. People didn't want to keep searching the dungeon over and over because they were sick of the level. At least I was the first time I got stuck. Eventually I figured it out and once you get the hang of it, its not too bad.
It's deserving of the hardest though, since it was a bit harder than the rest of the dungeons in my opinion. However, I think much of the difficulty is attributed to the fact that it is a rather annoying level.

To me it wasn't too hard. The raising/lowering of water levels was annoying and the fact that I'd sometimes miss a key was frustrating, but it wasn't hard. I had fun fighting Shadow Link though, it gave me a good challenge.

The hardest thing in the Water Temple is battle with Dark Link.
So, the Water Temple is not hard, but if I forget a key somewhere, I must claim the water level, to get there.

It is probably the easiest temple in OoT to miss something in. I know there is a block that has to be pushed that if not pushed can seriously cause backtracking problems for most people as they try to figure out where to go to get to that block.
Hylian Hobbit
08-26-2008, 12:56 PM
I think the only thing that gave me trouble was finding the last key, but it wasn't too hard. It was a lot easier than the Forest Temple. That one always gives me trouble for some reason. :hmm:
As Chris said, that was my main problem with it. I didn't push this one block in, so I didn't get one of the keys I needed (maybe the last one, I don't know), took me a while to actually find it, I spent hours going through the whole dungeon trying to find this last key. And I seriously would bet you that I would make the same mistake again.

I got a quick question for you all. There is always talk about the one 'missing key' that everybody seems to miss... Is this actually the same key at all that we are all referring too? I do not remember the temple vividly so I'll try to explain as best as I can.
I remember one part where I was on the third floor of a room and there was a hole in the center of the room that led to the second and first floor. On the third floor you can play the song on the Ocarina to lower the water to the first floor. I'd do that, but as the water was lowering, I'd hug against one of the walls and catch onto a ledge, so that I'm actually on the second floor. From there I either opened a treasure chest... or bombed a wall that led to a treasure chest with the small key. (I don't remember exactly). I never really did find out if there was another way of getting this small key, but that is what I always did.
The other key that I can think of, is the one at the bottom of the central room. There was the tower like thing in the middle of the large circular room within the temple. At the very bottom of this tower, there was a small block. I think the first time you go into this tower, the water level is at the bottom, so the block covers a hole. However, the second time you enter this area, the water level has raised. You then need to use the iron boots to sink through that hole, which leads to another small key I believe.
Am I right with these two small keys? If I recall, these were the two 'tough' ones, but perhaps I'm just talking jibberesh and don't recall them. Either way, I thought they were hard (and I forgot if you got the Dungeon Map and Compass already at this point). If you did already get them, I have no problem with hard to reach treasure chests since the map/compass should guide you in that direction. If you didn't get the map/compass, perhaps they should have just allowed Link to find those before hand.

Well, the "missing key" that I remember having trouble with was the second one you talked about, I think. I don't vividly remember the water temple either (maybe I have "selective memory" or something :D) but I seem to remember having to get an extra key, and finally finding one there.
Well, I don't think that it was either of those keys, I know it was one in the central room, but I can't quite remember what it was.

I didn't find the water temple hard but it was annoying having to always change the water levels, swim from level-to-level, remove and put the iron boots on. The only thing worth it in the temple is the Longshot, in my opinion.

Always nice to find a thread you're interested in that you haven't posted in.
Anyway, I really hated the Water Temple. It was pretty confusing, plus we have the fact you can literally screw your game and have to start all over just by using a key in the wrong place. Maybe they should have went over the game more before releasing it.
And the water level rising and falling was so annoying.

Indeed, the water level was annoying. But other than that, I had to go through every door about 10 times before I figured out about the hole under the floating platform in the center. XD
Wonder why it's so easy to glitch that dungeon?
Kybyrian
09-06-2008, 10:31 PM
They probably just took so much time on it, and being such a confusing dungeon, couldn't really figure out everything, so they couldn't fix everything, like the way you can get stuck by using a key in the wrong place.

Yes, you fight Dark Link there. Or at least that's how I remember it. It's somewhere near to a place in the dungeon past a Like-Like or two if I remember correctly. I haven't played it in a while.
Oh and when you do get there, Din's Fire is a good thing to use.

I'm pretty sure that you can always access another key no matter where you have used the others. I've never had a problem with that before. Are you sure that you didn't just miss one of them?

Ya, the game didn't really do that to you. You always are able to progress and there is never a 'point of no return'. Although honestly, the first time through the temple, I thought I did just that. I ended up starting a new record, played through young Link and go to the Forest Temple... However, I then went back to the Water Temple on my other record and finally figured it out.

I think I just used my mad awesome sword skills to beat Dark Link :D.
But, know that I think about it, I don't remember having much trouble with the Water temple on my first play through. Later though, when my friend was stuck on it, I tried helping him out and we got the Longshot but got stuck on the last key you need before you get the boss key. I just couldn't remember what to do, because it had been quite a while, and it was very frustrating. Plus, we couldn't go online to check it out, because their online connection is dial-up, and it ties up the phone.

You shouldn't have to restart a game just because you went out of order on key sequence. Yes you may have to back to square one of sorts but resetting seems a tad extreme.

I really had no idea about Din's Fire with Dark Link. Heck, I didn't even know the Megaton Hammer was effective against him. What I did was just use simple sword skills to defeat him. I found it rather frustrating though, as it was a stalemate of sword strikes back in forth, until I finally hit him enough times to defeat him.
I thought he was a fun bus though. Personally, I thought the dungeon boss, Morpha, was the worst boss in the whole game. Just no... feeling to the boss, wasn't really scary looking, was so simple, and just nothing that was out of the ordinary. A better boss battle would have given me a better lasting impression, but I think Morpha fell a little short.

I liked the water temple boss personally. Though it could have used a few more devestating attacks.
The water temple is just as bad as the one in Twilight Princess (me and my step brother just defeated the frog boss and we had to go to bed) and when we got back on we were lost for hours untill we finally realised we went to every room open to us but the one where we killed the giant frog. After that it was smooth sailing.
Anyways the Water Temple in OoT is just about the same. It can be fairly challengind but if you spend all your time getting through it at once you should get through just fine. If you beat half the temple then save and leave and come back later, you lose track of what you needed to do next and were to go.

Seriously, in my opinion all water temples are some of the worst in the game. Water Temple in Ocarina of Time, Great Bay in Majora's Mask, Lakebed Temple in Twilight Princess, and even like Mermai's Cave or Jabu-Jabu's belly in Oracle of Ages. They are always some of the toughest and most agravating dungeons in the game.

While I too was not a big fan of Lakebed, it didn't have the annoying changing water levels like the Water Temple had. Sure you need to make water flow in dirctions but it was straight forward, never having to do it and than reverse it like the Water Temple, Raise, Raise, Lower, Raise, etc... with the Water levels. That was annoying.

It honestly wasn't the hardest temple.
I have seen way harder temples in my life, and they include the Shadow Temple, and the Great bay temple (MM). This temple just had a good maze to it, thats all.
So, it really wasn't that hard and I don't know why people say otherwise.

You know, I actually kind of like the Water temples because they're so difficult. I like a good challenge, and the Water temples also have some innovative systems. Like, in MM, the pipe system, or in TP controlling the flow of the water. It all has to do with water level and flow and things, but it's still neat.

The worst thing for me in the Water Temple was adjusting the water levels, finding the correct door in the process - without getting confused. It was almost like getting off a ride, you just don't seem to function properly after - and that is how I felt while doing it, as though I was dizzy. After doing it the first time, that feeling goes away - but I suppose while playing it early in the morning adds onto this problem. In general, I think the water incorporated into the temple was what caused more confusion for me.

Haha, maybe I'm just lame like that, and when I first went through the water temple it took me a good couple of hours. ^^
I mean, after that, I bought the walkthrough and it was a breeze. But this last time I played through it I forgot to raise the water level in the tower thing TWICE and had to go through the process of getting back up there (which invovled raising the water to the top, then back down to the bottom). That was the most annoying time I've played through it.

I honestly think that its difficulty is overrated. Sure, it's hard, but not "Turn off the Gamecube and throw it out the window" hard. I think it being moderately difficult is what makes it fun. I like a challenge once in a while, and I think the Water Temple was just the right difficulty.

The Water Temple was a real pain in the butt for me. When I first played it a few months ago, I remembered hearing horror stories about people screwing up and not being able to get a certain key. I thought that that happened to me, so I ended up having to start a new file, play all the way up to the temple again, and then I decided to be extra safe and just follow a walkthrough the whole way through so I wouldn't have to restart again. Upon watching the walkthrough, I realized that I actually hadn't screwed up, and that I didn't need to restart. I had wasted all that time replaying the game for nothing.

My second run through was better and I didn't have to much trouble with Dark Link since I used Din's Fire. But finding the last normal key was annoying and I couldn't get up the slope before the boss for about 5 minutes until I got lucky & didn't get hit by the spikes. The boss was easy though, I just stayed in a corner & killed it with barely any effort.
With the water levels, keys & all the backtracking, plus the potential to have to start a new game, makes it more of an annoying dungeon than a difficult one. But it is the most difficult temple in OoT and it has been one of the few dungeons that actually stumped me & made me think.

Hmm, I never thought about what would happen if you lost the Zora Tunic in the Water Temple. Is there really no other way to get another one except by getting a wallet upgrade and buying one? If so, that seems kinda harsh....

The Water Temple in OoT was hard for me. Pretty much every Water temple was hard for me. ><
I still can't beat it without struggling. -.-
Shadow link and the backtracking to change the water level is what was hard for me other than that, Well Its hard for me.

This temple is peanuts. If you get lost.. just have the Map & Compass handy and your good to go!

In my opinion, the water temple isn't hard, it seems people don't know the difference between hard and annoying.
And it sure annoyed me, especially when changing my boots every moment I wanted to enter a room.
Also, it isn't that puzzling, you just need to change the water levels a couple times. i would say it is more of a "trial and error".
Most of the time you just need to change the water levels and visit as many rooms as possible. Plus, when you beat Dark Link, something you do after like 2/3 of the water temple (I don't remember th percentage very well), it is very easy.
Though I was stuck like most of the people, mainly finding the key at the dragon statue room, and figuring out something I saw as a common wall was a bombable wall.

I never found it hard, as much as I did time consuming and sort of painful.
And slightly nightmare fuelish with a few unexpected monster **** occasions.

If a dungeon gets you stuck then generally its considered to be at least a tad bit difficult or Hard

This temple wasn't as hard as it was frustrating, it was very easy to get disoriented and lost. If I kept checking my map constantly and thinking about where I was going every time I went to a new room, I could make it through relatively easy. It just took awhile because the dungeon itself was very challenging in the fact that half the time you had no clue where you were. The boss wasn't a challenge at all, but getting to him was time consuming and tedious.

The Water Temple was not hard for me at all when I first played it and I did not even need a guide. I could understand why some people would find it so difficult because the keys were well hidden and easy to miss, but I always look at my surrounding carefully when I am in a temple, and I did not miss a single one. Backtracking to change the water level was annoying, but I just used Faeroes's Wind and suiciding to save time.

I guess I don't understand the people who "missed" a key/keys and started the entire game over. Why couldn't you just go back, raise or lower the water to the correct level needed and then get the key?

It's nice to see that Eiji Aonuma recently addressed this dungeon in an interview! (Although it does seem that he may be equating the difficulty to the frustration of inventory control...)
"The Water Temple in the Ocarina of Time was notorious for being very tough to conquer. I am most sorry that it was not easy for you to put on and take off the heavy boots; that all the time you had to visit the inventory. I am very sorry about that. I should have made it much easier to switch to the heavy boots."

Think i'm crazy but I always had some strange special love for water dungeons in The Legend of Zelda series... Water Temple being my favorite and Great Bay Temple and Lakebed Temple following short after.
First time through I was stuck here for few months. haha.. But eventually I tackled it. Love this temple.

Water temple was so easy that i got there in 5 minutes...
Unless you added a speed hack or something i severly doubt that.
Time it takes to lower water, rise water, defeat mini-boss, backtrack, beat boss. More than 5 minutes surely.
As for myself, i didn't really find it a problem, just takes a bit to do all the backtracking, Now that i play the games, i explore everywhere, so this meant when i lowered/raised the water, i went into the previous rooms to see the changes.
Only thing i had trouble with is Dark Link, but once i got the Biggorons Sword it was alright :)
I wouldn't exactly say it's hard, it's actually just annoying. You have to constantly raise/lower the water level, nearly each key requires a change in the water level, also. Not to mention some rooms you have to visit more than once at different points in it just to get the keys you need.
A problem I had with it was always forgetting a key and taking awhile to figure out which of the chests on the map it was, what water level I needed for it, and then actually getting to it. But, like I said, it wasn't hard; Just annoying.
Morpha was about the same story. Mainly with trying to hookshot that blasted eye, not to mention if you couldn't do it, you still had to get out of the way so you don't get grabbed and thrown.
So as a whole, it was just a giant pain to deal with and it probably always will be to me until the one time I get through it without having to backtrack more than required.

I Quite like the water temple, actually. Somehow, I managed to beat it without using one of ZD's highly useful walkthroughs.
I don't think it's hard, but it is like an extremely annoying puzzle. Trying to solve it, I found mysefl randomly going through those paths till I found what I was looking for. Annoying, but no, I think, hard, once you know your way around. (That's the hard part)

I can't speak much in this matter, because I got stuck in the Ice Cavern and I erased the game. So... yeah. And now I can't get past the Forest Temple nowadays.

It's certainly the most confusing Temple in the game. It took me a few hours to get through it. Once you figure out there is a basement under the floating platform the central pillar things start to become clear.

In the first time you play this temple, you need luck to pass it easily. But once you made it, you understand how the temple is logical and you wont have many problems when you do it again. This temple is harder because you have to think, not just do and thats why I liked it, although I didnt like to have to put and take the Iron Boots.
And for those that think that you used a key in the wrong place and think that screwed everything, I am convinced that it is impossible, you probably just have to do the things in a different order.
I also dont understando what is this "missing key" that some people are talking about and someone said something a block that you have to push and do something. I can remember 3 blocks and none of them gave me any problem.

Personally I had difficulty but not very much frustration. It may be the hardest but for me it is just barely above the Shadow/Spirit temples.

It took me forever the first time I played it, and the 2nd and the 3rd time I was still afraid to do it again. I think the people that managed to do it easily got lucky or something :P
There's a couple keys that gave me a lot of trouble, and I think it's definitely possible to use one in the wrong place, but I'm pretty sure it wouldn't screw you to the point of starting the game over, maybe they just couldn't find a key they needed? Cause the whole point is to drain, find as many keys, go up a water level, get as many keys as you can with half water, and fill and find as many like that, and then get Longshot, and once you have that you can repeat said steps, with a couple bumps in the road.
